Christopher McKay’s acting performance in Me And Orson Welles was unheralded, all around.  I think it slipped by in the press, and the movie was released at an unfortunate time, which, no one could’ve foreseen.

It coincided with the surprise release of Avatar, at the end stretch of Awards Season.

I think this film had a problem getting a box office grasp for a combination of reasons. It was directed by Richard Linklater; yet had an almost-bubblegummy box office star, Zac Efron. Linklater did talk up Zac Efron’s acting abilities, in the press, but Efron may have to age a bit, for the public to take him seriously. His status as a teenage heartthrob, ursurps any serious regard, for now.

Conversely, even though Zac Efron is such a popular actor, Me And Orson Welles didn’t have Studio backing. Linklater raised the money himself.

But it looked like a Studio film, in the photos. The ads. It wasn’t just Efron. The marketing made it look too predictable, perhaps; and the audiences didn’t seem to get interested. They couldn’t have, anyway.

This kind of film absolutely depends on word-of-mouth. If only everyone wasn’t saying one word only: Avatar. The Avatar tidal wave, oblitered this small and well-made film into near non-existance.

This film was old-fashioned, in this way. It was a story film. And it was good. I liked it a lot.

Along with the film, the other big news that got pushed aside was the acting ability, the performance, of this actor, brand new to film; who really deserved, far and away, much more notice than he got.

Christopher McKay, as Orson Welles, was superb.

Super-superb.

Actor Christopher McKay as Orson Welles

Here’s a video that I ran on Hollywood Actor Prep [link], of actor Christian McKay talking about how he prepared, and created the role in Me And Orson Welles. Richard Linklater, the director and filmmaker, is also on this video clip.
