Gabby Sidibe Had Never Acted Before The Film Precious.
When she won the role, she was actually in college, on her way to becoming a psychotherapist.
Perhaps that prepared her for some of the things that people tell her, after seeing the movie where she plays the character of the same name: Precious.
I get a lot of people thanking me because they thought these things only happened to them, and they felt really alone. You expect to talk to people who liked the movie, not to run into people who are so profoundly moved, that have lived this life. That’s really rewarding. It’s scary to think that these things happen to more than just one person, that they happen to so many people that we pass by and we have no idea, and who don’t think it’s OK to talk about it, and who don’t think they’ll ever be helped.
She’s pretty remarkable, this now-actress. Ms. Sidibe. (Who, obviously, always had the right stuff.) I saw her and Lee Daniels, the director of Precious, speak about it after a screening. You can read more about what I learned that night, from them, at this post: Acting Surprises In Precious, Hollywood Actor Prep.
You can also see her awesome acting audition video for Precious, on video, by going to this post at Hollywood Actor Prep. There’s a link there.
