rourke-still-wrestlerSean Penn, Best Actor Oscar

In the rush and the heat, all the excitement of the Oscar wins; and the fiercely joyous passion over “Milk”‘s triumph (that seems to permeate the industry), I’d like to point out that little part of his Sean Penn’s Oscar acceptance speech, again. What Sean said about Mickey Rourke…It is these sensitive ones, who are our finest actors.
Here’s to them.

The 2009 Oscar Winners. Well, we may all know exactly who won, on this day-after the Oscars; but in a year or so, a reference sheet may be desired…So, here they are, all in list that’s printable…

I posted this on Hollywood Actor Prep, that’s actually where I got the code from…When I posted it there, The Wrestler hadn’t been released yet. See the bottom of the widget? Please share this site with your friends…it’s for pre-Oscar enjoyment…Thanks.

Oscar Nominee + Independent Spirit Award Winner, Melissa LeoOscar Nominee + Independent Spirit Award Winner, Melissa Leo

Here’s Melissa Leo (video), who has already won over the hearts of many audience members, who saw the movie ‘Frozen River’; and I think she may have a shot at winning an Oscar.

Predictions of 2009 Oscar winners, and more (including what determines whether they’ll watch or not!) from The Telegraph UK:…

Actress Taraji P. Henson In 'Benjamin Button'Oscars 2009 Best Supporting Actress Nominee

She is a spirited woman in the midst of all these aging people, who are getting ready to die. She is a cherishing, loving mother, to this child who was born an old man. And, even when he’s Brad Pitt, she convinced me of her maternal love for Benjamin Button.

Viola Davis shows everything, in her character-restraining way of showing practically nothing.
She is calm, and direct, and holds back with the dignity of a black woman who is confronted, unexpectedly; and yet is able to maintain composure. All the while, letting us, the audience, get a sense of her whole life. All the burdens she experiences.

Movie Title Card:: 'The Star'A Star Is Born

Subtitle of this post could be: “I’m MRS. Norman Maine”… See the film clip, at end of this Oscar Prep post.

Accepting her 'movie Oscar', 'A Star Is Born'judy_garland_at_academy_awards2

Isn’t this the most memorable Academy Awards movie? I still love it, I do. (This is the “A Star Is Born with Judy Garland.)
I love the first one, even more. (With Janet Gaynor.) It was made shortly before this one, 2-3 years, if my trivia-memory serves me…

Next, they reveal: What are underlying influential factors, determinants; that motivate the members of the Academy when choosing the winner?

Tiny little moments, that strung together, make up the years in movies…pieces of nearly all of the very best films of this past year! On YouTube…Didn’t this guy put together a wonderful Oscar nomination show-piece?

Actor Sean Penn with his Oscar for 'Mystic River'Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, with James Franco

It says, on the very back page; in the final little blurb that a CPA named Tony Knapp, listed nine million dollars, for Sean Penn’s”Gay Lessons”, in ‘Milk’.As kooky as so much EX-cess Hollywood can seem…I don’t know…This one just administers a bit of a jolt. Something ’bout, it’s simplicity of description.

Best Actress Audrey Hepburn, "Roman Holiday"Best Actress Audrey Hepburn, "Roman Holiday"

Best Actress Winner, Audrey Hepburn, gives a thank-you speech. Lithe, with unchallenged grace. Eternally epitomizing the term…gamine.

The Real Harvey MilkThe Real Harvey Milk

Interested in seeing the real person, that Sean Penn played in the movie “Milk”?
The Gus Van Sant movie is up for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category; as is Sean Penn, for Best Actor.
This is from the documentary called “The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk”.

One myth, whether true or not, is that Bette Davis remarked that the derriere, specifically, of the statuette; reminded her of the same body part of one of her ex-husbands. (It certainly doesn’t look like my ex’s.)

“This was very different for me in so many ways because here I was being given that opportunity that I have waited a lifetime for, the opportunity to carry the film. So everything mattered that much more to me. I was that much more involved in all of it. There’s all kind of utter nonsense that goes on on-set but, somehow, you get the darn thing in the can anyway….”

Montgomery Clift & Oscar Winner Frank SinatraMontgomery Clift & Oscar Winner Frank Sinatra

I noticed that they all worked together, as if knitted together. It was my first sense, and desire, to be part of an acting ensemble. And, the role that Sinatra played, it was like a drop of ink on a piece of blotter paper. Just filled up the part. With an ease, and an intensity that never felt intense, at all. Magically alive.

Actor Cary Grantactor_cary_grant1

The following actors never won an Academy Award: Joseph Cotton, Dana Andrews, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, Fred MacMurray, Margaret Sullavan, Deborah Kerr, Ida Lupino, Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre…Anthony Perkins, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Orson Welles…

Best Actor Oscar to Marlon BrandoBest Actor Oscar to Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando won an Academy Award for “On The Waterfront”, and he did accept it. He is so beautifully, surprised and honored. What a time it was, for movies…What a time it was, for acting.

Oscar’s Best Actor Nominees Discuss The Answer Amongst Themselves…

Viola Davis, Actress: Doubt

Well, I was drawing from my life, too, from my mom. We were the only black family in Central Falls, Rhode Island in 1965. She had to fight doctors who wanted to experiment on us when we were sick, and she had to fight parents who saw us as thugs and bad influences on their children, though we were just rambunctious, creative kids. She had to fight teachers who just didn’t see our intelligence at times.

(Oh! So that’s why “The Dark Knight” didn’t get an Oscar nomination.)—But what frequently happens is that only two or three movies cross that threshold. In this case, the Academy takes the movie with the lowest number of No. 1 votes and reallocates those votes to the No. 2 choices on the ballots.

images-2images-21

That meant no multiple takes. No re-shooting anything, even if it wasn’t right. Or mistakes were made. It also meant that Mickey Rourke had to be an even better actor than credited. Unlike any other movie, there weren’t multiple scenes to choose from…

…6 The fable-like structure of the film has the strength and simplicity of a fairytale….9 The profound hatred or mistrust of corrupt wealth and the consequent adoration of lucky poverty could not have a better dramatic demonstration….10 The new air of magical realism is about to crush photographic realism in the movies.”

slumdogmillionairepic1slumdogmillionairepic1

Slumdog Millionaire is intriguing, though, because it is very difficult to pin down. Some audiences, promised a “feelgood” extravaganza, have been disconcerted to find themselves watching slum children deliberately blinded with acid…

Mickey Rourke, ActorMickey Rourke, Actor

When an actor is exceptional, the audience CAN’T tell whether it is the actor or the person. That is the way you can tell a magnificent performance. As soon as you stop “watching the actor”…

Gary Oldman did this interview way back, when they were doing press junkets for the “The Dark Knight”.
